Teradyne Robotics has announced plans to open a new U.S. Operations Hub in Wixom, Michigan, located in the heart of Metro Detroit, with operations expected to begin in 2026. This move marks a significant milestone in Teradyne’s North American expansion strategy and reinforces its commitment to supporting U.S. manufacturing through advanced robotics.
As an industrial automation engineer, I see this decision as a clear signal that collaborative and mobile robotics are transitioning from optional upgrades to core manufacturing infrastructure in the United States.
Local Manufacturing of Universal Robots Cobots
The new facility will manufacture Universal Robots (UR) industrial collaborative robots locally in the U.S., significantly reducing lead times, improving supply-chain resilience, and enhancing responsiveness to customer-specific requirements. The site is also designed with future expansion in mind, including the potential production of MiR autonomous mobile robots (AMRs).
From a technical standpoint, local manufacturing enables faster iteration cycles, better customization, and tighter feedback loops between end users, integrators, and engineering teams—critical advantages in today’s rapidly evolving automation landscape.
Beyond Manufacturing: Training, Service, and Customer Experience
In addition to production, the Wixom hub will function as a regional customer training center, service hub, and visitor experience center. This multi-functional approach reflects a deeper understanding of modern automation needs: robots alone are not enough—education, system integration, and lifecycle support are equally important.
