The ABB DI820 3BSE008512R1, also cataloged as the DI820 Digital Input Module, provides eight individually isolated digital input channels for 120 V AC and 110 V DC field signals in the ABB S800 I/O system. Each channel includes current limiting, EMC protection, optical isolation, status indication, and selectable digital filtering. Channels 1 and 8 can provide field voltage supervision for channel groups 2-4 and 5-7 respectively, with supervision status reported through the ModuleBus.

ABB S800 ModuleBus and Input Diagnostics

The DI820 processes field input states through an analog filter, optical isolation barrier, EMC protection components, current limiting components, and front-panel status indication. The module reports diagnostic information through the ModuleBus, including module error, module warning, and channel error conditions.

Channels 1 and 8 have an additional supervision function. Channel 1 can supervise field input voltage for channels 2-4, while channel 8 can supervise channels 5-7. Loss of the supervised voltage activates the corresponding error inputs and Warning LED.

The module provides front LEDs for Fault, Run, Warning, and channel status. The input filtering can be selected at 2, 4, 8, or 16 ms, while the analog filter has specified ON/OFF delays of 5 ms and 18 ms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What field signal ranges does the DI820 accept?
A: The module accepts 77-130 V AC and 75-145 V DC for a logic "1". Logic "0" ranges are 0-30 V AC and 0-20 V DC.

Q: Are the eight input channels electrically isolated from each other?
A: Yes. Each input channel is individually isolated and includes an optical isolation barrier.

Q: How does the DI820 detect loss of field input power?
A: Channel 1 can supervise channels 2-4, and channel 8 can supervise channels 5-7. Loss of the supervised voltage activates the error inputs and Warning LED, with the error condition available through the ModuleBus.

Field Installation Guidelines

Install the DI820 in a compatible S800 MTU using the specified keying code AB. Verify the selected MTU type against the approved compatibility list before wiring.

Separate AC or DC field wiring from low-level analog, communication, and other noise-sensitive circuits. Route conductors according to the site's EMC installation practices and maintain appropriate separation from high-current switching circuits.

Terminate cable shields according to the system grounding design and the applicable ABB installation documentation. Avoid creating unintended shield current paths through multiple grounding points.

Verify field polarity and voltage before energizing each input group. Confirm that the applied voltage remains within the specified input range and that field cable length is compatible with the stated limits.

Check the front-panel input status LEDs and ModuleBus diagnostics after commissioning. Where voltage supervision is configured, verify the supervised field supply and the corresponding Warning and diagnostic indications.
