Intrinsic Safety and Channel Isolation
The DI890 provides Intrinsic Safety protection independently on all eight input channels. Each channel is galvanically isolated from the power supply, ground, ModuleBus, and the other input channels. NAMUR proximity sensors can be powered and monitored directly by the input channels, while line faults can be detected without additional external components when the sensors conform to the NAMUR interface requirements.
For voltage-free contacts, external series and parallel resistors are required for line-fault supervision. The input stages derive their operating power from the 24 V supply connection and incorporate current limiting, short-circuit protection to ground and 30 V, over-voltage protection, and over-temperature protection.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Which field devices can be connected to the DI890?
A: The module accepts NAMUR-compliant proximity sensors and voltage-free contacts. Voltage-free contacts require external series and parallel resistors when line-fault detection is required.
Q: Are the eight DI890 input channels electrically isolated?
A: Yes. Each channel is individually galvanically isolated from the other channels, circuit common ground, the power supply, and the ModuleBus.
Q: Which mounting terminals are compatible with the DI890?
A: The module is compatible with TU890 and TU891 Compact MTUs. TU890 is specified for Ex applications, while TU891 is specified for non-Ex applications.
Field Installation Guidelines
- Install the DI890 on the specified S800 I/O mounting arrangement using a compatible TU890 or TU891 Compact MTU.
- Use TU890 for Ex applications and TU891 for non-Ex applications as specified by the system configuration.
- Verify that connected proximity sensors conform to the NAMUR interface requirements.
- For voltage-free contacts with line-fault supervision, install the required external series and parallel resistors according to the approved circuit design.
- Keep field signal wiring separated from high-voltage and high-current conductors to reduce electromagnetic coupling.
- Connect cable shields according to the installation and grounding design of the S800 I/O system and the applicable hazardous-area requirements.
- Verify the channel wiring and polarity before energizing the 24 V supply.
- Check the front Fault, Run, Warning, and channel-status LEDs after commissioning.
- Observe the specified 0 to +55 deg C operating range and the lower 40 deg C maximum ambient limit where applicable to vertical mounting in the compact MTU.
- Maintain the applicable hazardous-location installation requirements for ATEX, IECEx, cFMus, and associated Zone 0/Zone 2 interfaces.
