Line Differential Protection and Substation Communication

RED615 exchanges line differential protection information between two substations through either a fiber-optic communication link or a galvanic pilot wire connection. The protection function is phase-segregated and can be applied to overhead lines and cable feeders.

The relay supports line differential applications with an in-zone transformer. Backup functions include directional and non-directional phase overcurrent, directional and non-directional earth-fault protection, and additional admittance, wattmetric, and harmonics-based ground-fault functions.

For substation communication, RED615 supports IEC 61850 Editions 1 and 2, GOOSE messaging, HSR, PRP, and IEC 61850-9-2 LE process bus communication. Modbus, DNP3, and IEC 60870-5-103 are also supported. IEEE 1588 V2 provides time synchronization for Ethernet-based substation communication.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How is the two-end line differential communication physically connected?

A: The two RED615 end relays can communicate through a direct fiber-optic link or a galvanic pilot wire connection.

Q: Does RED615 support both protection and backup overcurrent functions?

A: Yes. The relay provides phase-segregated two-end line differential protection and includes directional and non-directional overcurrent and earth-fault protection functions.

Q: What auxiliary supply ranges are specified for RED615?

A: The supplied data specifies high auxiliary voltage options of 100 / 110 / 120 / 220 / 240 V AC at 50/60 Hz and 48 / 60 / 110 / 125 / 220 / 250 V DC. Low auxiliary voltage options are 24 / 30 / 48 / 60 V DC.

Field Installation Guidelines

Install the relay according to the applicable RED615 mounting and wiring documentation. Verify the selected auxiliary supply rating before energization.

For line differential communication, use the specified fiber-optic interface or galvanic pilot wire arrangement according to the protection scheme. Keep communication wiring separated from high-current power conductors where practical.

For instrument transformer connections, verify phase identification, polarity, secondary circuit continuity, and protection circuit grounding before commissioning. Apply the specified shielding and grounding arrangement for communication and signal cables.

The withdrawable plug-in unit should be installed and removed only under the conditions specified by the applicable ABB installation documentation. Before testing protection functions, verify CT and VT circuits, binary I/O wiring, communication links, auxiliary supply, and relay configuration.

Configure IEC 61850, Modbus, DNP3, or IEC 60870-5-103 interfaces according to the selected station architecture. Verify time synchronization and communication supervision before placing the protection scheme into service.
