Generator Protection and Measurement Functions

REG670 integrates protection functions for the generator electrical zone and associated generator-transformer equipment. Up to 24 CT/VT analog inputs can support combined main and backup protection functions in one IED.

Generator differential protection provides a typical operating time of approximately 15 ms for internal phase-to-phase and phase-to-earth faults. The protection architecture can also support duplicated Main 1 and Main 2 protection functions when the selected hardware and configuration provide the required redundancy.

For stator earth-fault protection, REG670 supports injection-based 100% coverage and 3rd harmonic-based protection. Injection can be implemented through a neutral-point VT or an open-delta VT at the generator terminals. Rotor earth-fault monitoring uses an injection principle to assess field-winding insulation relative to ground.

REG670 also provides integrated sub-synchronous resonance protection for applicable turbo-generator configurations, using filtering and protection algorithms associated with shaft torsional behavior.

IEC 61850 and Station Communication

The IED supports IEC 61850-8-1 Edition 1 and Edition 2 together with IEC 60870-5-103, DNP3, Modbus RTU/TCP, LON, and SPA interfaces. Ethernet interfaces can use optical LC or RJ45 connections. PRP and HSR functions provide redundant Ethernet network paths when supported by the selected hardware configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What measurement inputs are available on REG670?
A: The supplied specification identifies up to 24 universal CT/VT analog input channels per unit, with expandable binary inputs and output relays.

Q: What is the typical operating time of the generator differential protection?
A: The supplied data specifies approximately 15 ms typical operating time for the differential protection function.

Q: Can REG670 provide duplicated main protection functions?
A: Yes. The supplied documentation states that the hardware can accommodate duplicated protection functions for Main 1 and Main 2 configurations, subject to the selected configuration.

Field Installation Guidelines

Mount the REG670 in the specified 19-inch rack configuration and provide mechanical clearance appropriate to the selected enclosure. Confirm the exact hardware variant before wiring the auxiliary supply because the supported DC and AC voltage ranges are variant dependent.

Terminate CT and VT circuits according to the protection scheme and verify polarity, phase identification, and circuit continuity before energization. CT secondary circuits must be handled according to applicable protection-system safety procedures.

Separate power, CT/VT, binary I/O, and communication wiring where practical to reduce electromagnetic coupling. For Ethernet communication, use the specified LC optical or RJ45 interface and apply the required PRP or HSR network topology when redundancy is configured.

Connect protective earth and cabinet bonding according to the installation design. Verify the selected communication protocol, IED addressing, IEC 61850 configuration, and PCM600 project configuration before commissioning.
