Dundalk Hosts Cross-Border Manufacturing and Robotics Event to Advance Industrial Automation

Dundalk Becomes a Meeting Point for Advanced Manufacturing

Dundalk, Ireland, is hosting a cross-border event focused on advanced and sustainable manufacturing, bringing together small businesses, industrial leaders, researchers and policymakers from across Ireland and Northern Ireland. Hosted by the Advanced Manufacturing Training Centre of Excellence (AMTCE), the event aims to strengthen cooperation, encourage knowledge exchange and support the development of manufacturing technologies across the island.

The gathering comes at a time when manufacturers are facing increasing pressure to improve production efficiency, reduce resource consumption and adopt more flexible automation systems. Robotics, artificial intelligence (AI) and digital manufacturing technologies are becoming important parts of this transition.

Ireland Launches Its First Robotics and Automation Apprenticeship

One of the key developments associated with the event is the launch of Ireland's first apprenticeship programme dedicated to Robotics and Automation. The initial group of apprentices began their training in Dundalk last month at the AMTCE.

The programme is delivered by the Louth and Meath Education and Training Board (LMETB). It is the first and currently the only course of its kind in Ireland, providing a Level 6 qualification for people seeking technical careers in industrial robotics and automation.

The first intake consists of nine apprentices, including seven men and two women. Their backgrounds vary considerably. Some have recently completed their Leaving Certificate, while others have already spent years working in industry and are returning to education to develop new technical skills.

Their employers operate across several sectors, including mining, pharmaceuticals and construction. This range of industrial backgrounds reflects the growing application of robotics and automation beyond traditional automotive and manufacturing facilities.

Dedicated Robotics Facilities Support Practical Skills Development

The AMTCE has established dedicated robotics laboratories to provide practical training in modern industrial automation. These facilities give apprentices an opportunity to develop technical experience with the equipment and technologies increasingly used in automated production environments.

The apprenticeship was developed through cooperation between an industry consortium and the LMETB, with validation from Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI), the independent state agency responsible for quality assurance and qualifications.

QQI validation is particularly relevant to the programme's future development. It allows other Education and Training Boards (ETBs) to apply to deliver the same qualification, potentially expanding access to robotics and automation training across Ireland.

From an industrial engineering perspective, practical laboratory training is important because understanding automation requires more than theoretical knowledge. Technicians need to understand how robotic equipment interacts with sensors, control systems, actuators, safety devices and industrial communication networks.

Industry Skills Must Keep Pace with AI and Digital Manufacturing

LMETB Chief Executive Martin O'Brien highlighted how AI, robotics, automation and digital technologies are changing the way products are designed, developed and manufactured.

He also emphasized the importance of connecting education providers with employers so that training programmes can respond to actual industrial requirements.

This relationship is particularly important as manufacturing systems become increasingly integrated. A modern production line may combine programmable logic controllers (PLCs), industrial robots, machine vision, motion control, distributed control systems (DCS) and industrial Ethernet networks.

As a result, the demand for technical personnel is expanding beyond traditional mechanical and electrical maintenance. Industrial technicians increasingly need to understand system integration, automation diagnostics, equipment communication and production data.

In my view, the biggest challenge is not simply introducing more robots into factories. It is developing personnel who can maintain, troubleshoot and optimize the complete automated production system. Without these capabilities, investments in robotics and digital manufacturing may not deliver their expected operational benefits.

Cross-Border Cooperation Strengthens Manufacturing Development

The Dundalk event also provides an opportunity for the new apprentices to meet regional representatives and discuss the future of manufacturing skills and industrial development.

Among the scheduled participants are local TD Erin McGreehan, chair of the Oireachtas Committee on Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, and Dr Caoimhe Archibald, MLA and Northern Ireland's Minister for the Economy.

The event is designed to accelerate collaboration between businesses, educational institutions and policymakers on both sides of the Irish border.

Organizers intend it to become the first in a series of all-island networking events, with future gatherings alternating between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

This approach could help manufacturers share technical knowledge, identify common workforce requirements and establish stronger relationships with training providers and research organizations.

What This Means for the Future of Industrial Automation

The developments in Dundalk highlight an important shift in the manufacturing industry: workforce development is becoming just as important as investment in automation hardware.

Robotic systems can improve production consistency, repeatability and operational flexibility, but their performance depends on correct integration, programming, commissioning and maintenance.

For manufacturers, three areas deserve particular attention:

  • Technical training: Apprenticeships and practical laboratory programmes can help address the shortage of personnel with robotics, PLC and automation maintenance skills.
  • System integration: Future technicians need to understand how robots interact with control systems, industrial networks, sensors and production equipment.
  • Cross-border knowledge exchange: Cooperation between manufacturers, researchers and educational institutions can accelerate the adoption of manufacturing technologies and help businesses respond to changing production requirements.

The Dundalk initiative is therefore more than an educational development. It represents an effort to connect industrial investment with the technical workforce required to support it.

As manufacturing continues to adopt robotics, AI and digital technologies, programmes that combine practical training with direct industry participation will play an important role in preparing the next generation of automation professionals.
